Into the Canyon: Real-World Testing the Grand Canyon with Women Who Explore

Some places feel impossible to fully capture until they are experienced firsthand, and for Baffin Wholesale Marketing Coordinator Sally Nguyen, the Grand Canyon was one of those places. This April, Sally joined Women Who Explore on a four-day backpacking adventure through the canyon alongside guide Marci from Backcountry Found. Together, the group descended from the South Rim to the Colorado River, spending four days exploring side trails, camping in the canyon, and Real-World TestingTM Baffin gear in completely new conditions.

From steep rocky descents and creek crossings to dramatic temperature changes and long days on the trail, every day brought new challenges — and unforgettable views.

Day 1: Descending into the Canyon

The trip began at Hermit Trailhead on the South Rim under clear skies and cool temperatures around 10°C — ideal conditions to begin the descent into the canyon.

For the hike, Sally wore Baffin’s EDEN MID boots, BASE LAYER LINER SOCKS, and the new TRAIL WIND CAP. Almost immediately, the terrain became steep, loose, and rocky. The heel-locking system on EDEN MIDs helped keep her feet secure and stable throughout the descent, while the traction provided confidence on loose rock and gravel.

As the group made their way deeper into the canyon, they stopped often to take in the constantly changing landscape — layered canyon walls, desert vegetation, and lizards crossing the trail.

After hiking approximately 16 kilometres and descending 1,193 metres, the group arrived at their first campsite at Monument Creek. As temperatures dropped in the evening, Sally layered on Baffin’s TUNDRA PROTOTYPE JACKET to stay warm around camp before settling in for the night.

It was a challenging first day, but an incredible start to the adventure.

Day 2: Monument Creek to Granite Rapids

The second day began with sunrise in the canyon and cool morning temperatures around 10°C. While preparing breakfast at camp, Sally layered up in Baffin’s MID LAYER FULL ZIP PROTOTYPE and TUNDRA JACKET PROTOTYPE while wearing RECOVERY CLOGS around camp.

Before leaving camp, the group explored Monument Creek slot canyon, navigating tight rocky terrain and light scrambling sections. The ICEBITE® traction on the EDEN MID boots provided reliable grip on wet, slippery rock throughout the route.

After packing up camp, the group continued toward Granite Rapids. Although elevation loss for the day was minimal, the loose rocky terrain and rising afternoon temperatures nearing 26°C added another layer of difficulty.

By early afternoon, they arrived at Granite Rapids beside the Colorado River, where the group cooled off with a quick dip before spending time exploring the rapids and relaxing along the shoreline. 

After a full day on the trail, the RECOVERY CLOGS provided comfort and protection around camp while allowing feet to recover before the next day’s hike.

The evening ended with dinner, sunset views over the canyon walls, and preparation for another day of exploring.

Day 3: Exploring Hermit Creek

Day three began beside the Colorado River at Granite Rapids with calmer weather and warmer temperatures. After breakfast, Sally packed up camp, switched back into the EDEN MID boots, and clipped the RECOVERY CLOGS onto her pack using the built-in carabiner attachment.

Before leaving camp, the group paused to watch rafters navigate the rapids below — a reminder of the scale and power of the Colorado River from inside the canyon.

The day’s route covered roughly 9 kilometres with gradual elevation gain toward Hermit Creek. Along the way, the group stopped at the remains of the historic Hermit Creek Campground, once home to cabins and a restaurant before the structures were removed in the early 1930s.

Upon arriving at Hermit Creek, the group spent the afternoon exploring the creek and surrounding slick rock. The B-Tek Dry Waterproof Breathable technology in EDEN MID kept Sally’s feet dry while maintaining breathability through creek crossings and wet terrain.

Later in the afternoon, Sally changed back into the RECOVERY CLOGS and relaxed near a small waterfall. Before returning to camp for dinner, the group spent some more time exploring the area surrounding camp, following the creek through towering canyon walls and quiet pools of water. Away from the more demanding sections of the trail, it was a chance to slow down, take in the scenery, and enjoy a peaceful moment together in one of the canyon’s most beautiful and secluded areas.

Day 4: The Climb Out

The final day began early with cold, windy temperatures around 6°C. Baffin’s TUNDRA PROTOTYPE JACKET helped keep Sally warm while the group packed up camp and prepared for the long climb back to the rim.

By 7 a.m., the group began a 13-kilometre hike with 1,193 metres of elevation gain back toward Hermit Trailhead. Following the Tonto Trail, they passed through shifting rock layers and changing terrain throughout the ascent.

The TPU shank and torsional rigidity in the EDEN MID boots provided stability and support across uneven terrain during the climb. Cooler temperatures and overcast skies helped make the demanding uphill hike more manageable.

The final 2.5 kilometres proved to be the most difficult section of the trip, but reaching the rim marked the completion of a full rim-to-river traverse of the Grand Canyon.

And after four days on the trail, slipping into the RECOVERY CLOGS at the finish line was the perfect way to end the adventure.

Final Thoughts

The trip through the Grand Canyon was more than just a backpacking experience — it was an opportunity to explore one of the world’s most iconic landscapes while Real-World Testing Baffin gear in completely different conditions.

From steep descents and loose rock to creek crossings and fluctuating temperatures, every piece of gear was tested throughout the journey. The experience showcased how Baffin products can perform beyond winter environments in rugged, demanding terrain.
